It’s a little bit overdue to be analyzing the movies of 2015, since most thinkpieces and articles about that came out in the first week of January, but there is one part of 2015 that I want to focus on that Hollywood isn’t necessarily very proud of: the weekend of October 30th to November 1st.
Okay, change of plan. I WAS going to write about Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, but I didn’t get around to watching that. Instead, I went and saw Dennis Villeneuve’s Sicario. I’ll start out by saying that it was an excellent film and you should go see it while it is still in theaters, but I noticed that there was something very misleading about the film’s marketing in comparison to the finished product.
Let’s get this out of the way right now– The Martian is a great movie. It is extremely well-plotted, visually stunning, has a great cast, and is hilarious. It is almost like it is the third chapter in an annual saga of (relatively) scientifically-accurate space dramas that all deal with isolation and seeming hopelessness, after 2013’s Gravity and 2014’s Interstellar. However, The Martian contrasts itself with the other two movies in this spiritual trilogy and is actually a completely different movie than either of them. In fact, it is tonally unique among most any space travel movies.
Life sucks sometimes.
As you noticed, there were no posts on HCAD yesterday, marking our first-ever contentless day. Not a good thing at all! I (Thedude3445) had not one, but two posts scheduled for yesterday, including the continuously-delayed The Martian article, but yesterday turned into a complete bust very quickly, and I couldn’t do a thing about it.
With all luck, that’ll be the only non-posting day for a very long time. This week ends “Theweek3445” and resumes posting from both Kenny and me. We have a lot of good stuff planned for the week. And while my thoughts on The Martian didn’t come on Friday or Sunday as promised, they will come sometime this week. Possibly today, if we are lucky.
The ACTUAL Movie Club article for this week will be: Mortal Kombat, the 1995 movie directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
With all the dumb Movie Club stuff to happen, I have decided I’m just going to write an article on The Martian and publish it on Sunday. It’ll be mostly a review, though it will also try to cover a specific topic in the movie. You’ll see!
Bad news, folks. I went on Netflix and realized that the movie that was going to be covered for this week’s Movie Club, Annie Hall, left Netflix (today in fact). I hadn’t watched it yet for my essay, so this means it ain’t gonna happen in time for the article tomorrow.
You might be asking right now, “Yo Thedude3445, what the hell? Wouldn’t a good writer have already watched it weeks ago and written the final draft of the article by now?” Yes, a good writer would have.
