Kuttsukiboshi x Madoka Magica – Chapter 13

Chapter 13

And with a zap, Madoka, Sayaka, Crispina, and Nagisa were back. Asuka was so glad, except for the fact that… none of the trainees were there. And there was another Sayaka whose color palette was very desaturated. And there was a Homura but with short hair and glowing red eye. Two Sayakas certainly wasn’t the worst thing in the world but Asuka was very disconcerted about it.

Richard saw only gray in front of her. The landscape of Antarctica was generally very much harsh and white, but now it seemed that little had changed except the color of the harshness. She thought it would at least have some life around here…

She looked at Dyan and saw her very odd expression. Richard didn’t think that Dyan was expecting the future to look at all like this, so she guessed it was a shock to her too. 600,000 years in the future, and several species should have evolved considerably by now, especially the more rapidly-reproducing ones, but Richard saw no real evidence of any evolved species.

In fact, she didn’t see any species at all.

“I really wish you would talk to me more about all this,” Future Stephen said. “The past few weeks, I feel like you’ve just been…” he trailed off, and never tried to pick up where he left off. This version of Stephen just didn’t sound like the Stephen that Future Stephen used to know, with his hesitant attitude and constant sighing. Future Stephen was almost too disconcerted to bother talking to him.

So all she said was, “I don’t feel like there’s many people I can talk to anymore.”

Future Stephen took quite a few seconds to respond. Finally, he said, “And I guess I’m not one of those people,” and stood up, ready to leave.

“Alright, let me get this straight,” Stephen said, sitting in the middle of the ISRFA infirmary. “There are two versions of me now, and it’s all because this secret time travel project you’re working on went to shit?”

“Pretty much,” Richard said. “I had no idea about the going to shit thing until now either, though, so don’t ask me about it. Ask her.” She pointed to Dyan.

“I honestly don’t know. Future Richard is still out cold, and Future Stephen is too preoccupied with taking care of her to answer any of our questions. So I guess we’ll know in a few hours, assuming nothing goes to shit on our end.”

“Well it wouldn’t surprise me if it did,” Stephen said, standing up from his chair. “You guys are trying to play God, for what purpose? Science?”

“Yeah,” Richard said.

“Basically correct,” Dyan said.

Richard could barely think before she felt the explosions from across the window. The stomps grew closer and closer, and she heard several bellowing roars. Dyan backed away slowly and–

The west entrance of the observatory hall exploded, The structure detached from one of its four hinges, and Richard saw a massive figure rushing to where the group of employees were standing.

It was a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Chapter 4

I’m dreaming about ebony-colored horses and a triceratops feasting on the world’s largest salad. I find nothing wrong with it, other than that I am not joining in with the feast. I feel hungry, though everything around me is food. This probably means something, I think, but I continue to act according to the logic of what is presented in front of me. It disturbs me.

I see a flash across the sky, and suddenly an aurora. A man named Antepenultimatum teaches me how to overcome myself and release the witch inside of me and all beings, though I know there is nothing third-to-last about me. I am the best.

The flash across the sky turns into a human shape and floats down to meet me in the grassy plains. I greet the being of yellow energy, until it turns into Dyan Moore. Then I am more befuddled than anything.

“Guess what, Richard?” Dream Dyan asks me.

Chapter 3

Dyan, Richard, Hannah, and that Somalian kid, whose name was Odawaa as Richard learned, walked along the bank of the creek. Hannah carried a net, filled with several small arthropods, while Odawaa was busy sketching out drawings of his surroundings. Because they were in the Carboniferous period, all four of them had to wear masks to breathe because the atmosphere was somewhat different in this time period than it was in the present, and it would probably been too harmful to go without protection. Richard wondered why they had to carry giant backpacks full of “modern-day air,” with all the technological advances the ISRFA had accomplished. Surely they could have worn some sort of invisible mesh suits over their entire body that circulated air or something.

While she also had the cumbersome breathing apparatus on, Dyan was dressed in full safari outfit, complete with a machete and Pith helmet. She hacked down some vines and charged ahead of the rest of the group.

Richard sat on the foot of Stephen’s bed while Stephen was getting dressed. She wore an uncertain expression, and that was certainly how she felt inside. She couldn’t see Stephen’s face, but she knew he felt both a little elated and a little betrayed.

“I need to explain why,” Richard blurted out suddenly. Stephen did not respond immediately, so she continued. “I know I talked about leaving this place for a year, and I had already packed my things, but Dyan Moore talked to me and… she’s letting me run a new project.”

Chapter 1

Richard Phylum had been working at the International Scientific Research Facility in Antarctica, or ISRFA, for eleven years and three months, but tonight, she was lost. She couldn’t believe she was lost in the facility where she had worked for over a decade, but she had no idea where she was, and there was nobody around to help her.

The lights were off, but it was only six at night. Richard could see nothing in the dim hallway; the displays beside her were dark, and the howling winds of the outside faintly blew through the dome’s sound barriers. She couldn’t help but think she was in some sort of strange dream, though she knew she was fully conscious.

A scrape against the floor made her jump; she turned around, only to see the heating system turning on in a nearby vent. Everything was made to look like it was powered down, and yet the facility seemed to be working at optimal capacity… Richard did not enjoy this situation one bit.
